To what extent does internet piracy pose a threat on the film industry?
I personally thing that Internet Piracy does pose a threat on the film industry because with modern technology that is now around it is becoming more easy to download films from the internet for free. The new Wolverine film that was realised is an example. Someone got there hands on it before it came out and stuck it onto the internet so the film didn't make a huge profit in the cinema. This is bad for other film companies not just hollywood because with the new technology that we have we can easily just go onto a computer to watch any film we wish to watch. This the film industries hardest challenge to try and beat. The way they have done this is 3D. 3D has become huge now. Nearly every film has been made 3d as well as old films to be remade into 3D. The reasons for this is because people cant stream 3D films through the internet because the screens are right for the film plus at the cinemas it cost loads so the film is most likely going to get its money back. Nearly everyone watches films online because there easy to access. In early cinema films would be on massive round, heavy disks that would hold the film. Sometimes there would be two of them where it cant hold to much films and the cinemas would have intermissions half way through the film. Now its sent via email where its actually even more dangerous to get a hold of (for the film companies) Hackers can easily get there hold on these films and stick the onto the internet. These people who stick films onto the internet have become high on the film industries WANTED lists. Megaupload is a huge example. Kim Dotcom is the owner of Megaupload. He took films and stuck the on the internet for free. His house was raided and he was taken to court. This is how bad the film industry has got that people are actually getting arrested for illegally downloading films. We all watch films online because we have become to lazy and cheap to go out to a cinema and spend money on them or buy the DVD.
Hollywood/Mainstream films see piracy as a threat.
Independent films dont see this as much as a threat then hollywood/mainstream film because they want people to see these films and know who they are.
Internet piracy also allows people to promote films for free.
The technological impact of 3D is that 3D has become an prevention from illegal downloads as well as trying to appeal to a wider audience for people who like 3D. Most film directors don't want to do 3D film because they believe its pointless but with massive film industries who want money out of it they forced these directors to put it in there somewhere just to show it off. The Amazing Spiderman was a 3D film and there was literally 2 scenes in 3D, one being half way though when Peter Parker is jumping over buildings and another where Spiderman shoots a bit of web at the screen......pointless. This shows that the directors didn't want to do a 3D film but just put it in there so a wider audience will go and see an action 3d film where 3D is adored (in the action Genre) This has a bigger effect on cinematography by using certain camera shots that show of 3D. sometimes you dont have a choice in what film you want to watch because its just in 3D. 3D is more expeinsive then 2D so its just looking for profit.
Social impacts are used to watching films online and how entitled to watch films for free. I believe that 3D is a waste of money and is pointless. It should only be used at places like theme parks for little kids and cartoons. Its making cinema more of theme park experiance for kids and its lessed focused about story and more about visuals. This is the audience fault because of the films that we watch online. Most directors love it but some have put 3D in there films not cos they like it but because its something people like and it gets more money. Critics always talk about 3D in film and talk about if it works or not. Most of them hate it because its just in there for no reason, 3D is around to try and stop websites such as Megaupload to try and stop illegal downloads because people cant download 3D film.
3D film has grossed so much money for the film industry. This is because the prices are stupidly high and you cant watch them at home unless you have a 3D TV. It has definitely made a huge impact in the film Industry and cinema attendance due to the fact no one can sit at home at watch them. It has made modern film industries try to create more 3D films as well. A major example is the fact that there now bringing old time classics that now late teenagers ranging from 16 - 19 to go back to the cinema to watch films such as Lion King in 3D because of the experience of modern cinema and its also to make the company who made the film even more money because its an old film and 3D will cost people loads of money. I don't see the point in this because i would happily chose a Video version of the film because its a better experience for me and brings back my childhood other then the 3D version which the films poster always has "A blast from the past" wrote on it.
Economically 3D film has made so much money that more and more studios are using it including cartoons. This is because people are spending so much money on tickets as well as food and drink. Cinema attendance has gone up by so much. If a new actor is a main character in a 3D film they are an intent star in the film industry as well as the director of the film. 3D is an expensive thing so if a director uses it and a no body actor is in the film as the main role they will get huge from it. 3D has got to the point where they have run out of ideas so they will make Prequels, Remakes, Sequels and even make old films 3D. This brings in a guaranteed audience that will bring people back to watch the film if it was a success. This prevents risk taking and Guarantees that they are investing money into a film that old and new people will love that they have already watched before and will get there money back. It will be the same films you saw years ago just in 3D. we can just watch them at home on our DVDs or even Videos instead of wasting loads of money to watch a film we already own but because its in 3D more people will want to watch it.
In conclusion the film industry sees it has a huge threat to the film industries profits which come from the box office and in turn the money that they get from that goes into production budget. This profit is going into re creating old films but in 3D.
i would have to say that 3D is a waste of money and time. its pointless. film makers will put it in there for half a minute just for an accuse for there to be 3D in it and make more money. The threat of piracy has shot down because no one can watch a 3D film without the right technology. These studios and producers don't care on the fans they just care about the 3D and the money it will make. Its at that point where most films have such a lame and weak story that they don't care as long as its action, in 3D and has some form sex appeal (transformers)

Homework (part 2)
The Studio’s View
The view on 3D by the studio is that films are becoming less orientated around narrative and more focused on the implementation of 3D. This can be link to the success of the film Avatar and how it’s use of 3D technology made it the biggest grossing film of all time. As a result of this, 3D has been used in films in order to make more money through the extra cost for glasses. They also make money through the additional audience members that see the film, due to the appeal towards the improved quality and animation.
Websites such as Megaupload and Channel1 have also been a rising concern with studios, on the basis it loses them money and is a reason for the cinema attendance to decline. This is because the websites are used to stream and share varying mediums ranging from novels, television series and most importantly in relation to the topic at hand, films. One of the studios ways to counter this is the use of 3D to pull in audiences, promoting the technology as a quality that cannot be offered at home.
Critic’s View
In the eyes of the critic, 3D technology is recognised as a tool to draw in audiences and make money. It’s involvement in the film industry is mainly for money making purposes. With this, films have become more orientated around incorporating features for 3D, resulting in a more simplistic or repetitive narrative.
Director’s View
The directors of films may feel obligated now to change their films in order to meet the demands of 3D and try to condone the use of the technology in the multiplexes. It may be that they feel the only way to create a film that has significance or impact, is to use features that will be for the purposes of 3D.

Mock Exam
i believe that film censorship is motivated
by film due to the way we now make films that have changed from the 1980's to
now. They all related back to home video and video nasties. this is due the
fact that films now have huge budgets and can only viewed if they are allowed
in the country. Due the piracy for films (that is used a lot) we can now go
from watching a film on a VHS to watching them online so the bans are to insure
people not to watch these films but because people are telling us not to it
makes up want to.
Home video has been around since the 1980s
and has had things such as piracy and other forms of ways for people to
illegally watch films. These illegal videos to be watched of VHS or other ways
to watch films has changed our technology side as well as the economic side of
film. Technical wise it has shown a new way of watching films at home and for
the economic side of things it has made a huge dent in the studio side because
people are paying for films to dealers (film dealers) to get a rubbish copy of
a film that they can watch when they want and no money is going to the film
companies. A lot of other ways that is both social and economic is that with
VCR and tapes of films more then one person can watch them at a time so other
people can lend the tape of the films to there friends for them to watch on
there home television screen which for the film companies it takes even more
money from them because one copy of a film can be watched by loads of people
not just one person and the other people can watch them for free. VCR has also
damaged cinemas as well because people can watch films for free in there homes
and not waste money to watch them at the cinemas.
Video nasties are films that may be to
graphic or gory for certain people. An example of this is The Human Centipede 2
which was filmed in the UK but was banned in the UK as well. This is down the
political side of films. most first world countries have rules when it comes to
films and these rules is so that the there is a age rating on the films poster
and box. This censorship is to ensure that no one under the age that the films
has been rated watch the film. Most video nasties are all horror based which
contains graphic images and may have sexual related scenes in. All video
nasties are played by not really famous actors that no one has heard of and
there are all really cheap. Economic side of things is that they don't have
much to pay back to the film studio and wont run the risk of going to far over
there budget. Technology has also caused a massive change in video nasties.
Some films are banned in countries and what people will do is put them onto the
internet so people can watch them so there are other ways to get around that
ban of the film.
The moral panic of films are due to that
fact that if a film is to bad to be viewed it is to be banned in that certain
country. With the BBFC coming into play and saying "this film is to bad to
be viewed in our country" it makes a few people say "we cant watch
that" but mostly others to say "we really want to watch this
film". The BBFC is a conservative based political view on films issued by
Margret Thature when she was the Prime Minister of England in the 1980s. The
Conservative party is a selfish department. They want people to believe in what
they think is right for films.
The BBFC issued that films would be able to
be bought at shops to be watched on VHS and later DVD. They made it so that all
the profits from the film are sent to the owners of the film and the companies
that issued it. The censorship label was also still there so that no kids or
people under the age of the censor could buy the film. This made the economic profits
for films go up other then cinema profits. The ability to legally buy films in
shops but have most of the money go to the films owners was a massive
improvement to the cinema industry but sadly it had a downfall. Now that one
person buys a film they can them stick it on the internet for more people to
watch and in a high quality. An example of this is a site which is now shut
down called Mega Video which is full of films and other content that can be
viewed for free. The owner was arrested which shows how high the risk is and
its also shows how far we have come with our technology that we can view
thousands of old and new films online for free.
In conclusion we have taken a few steps
forwards for good aspects of being able to watch films such as bigger screens,
better sound and picture but at the same time its gone down as well, with the
being able to watch films online. In the 1980s it was difficult to watch a
pirated film that was actually good but now we can just type in what film we
want to watch and accesses it easily. With video nasties there might as well be
no ban at all. Its easy to understand why the ban is there but no matter what
country the film is banned in there will be someone to upload it to the
internet to watch for free. Most film companies have become more mainstream and
have brought back old films but re made to make it look more modern so that it
shows the film off a little bit more but it the older version is better because
its a blast from the past. Horror directors are not big in the film industry
mainly because they don't use a huge budget and a huge company like films such
as The Advengers. People are not as scared as horror films now. in the 1980's
people would be scared of vampires and other monsters now we have films where
these so called "monsters" are in romantic films (Twilight) so horror
films have to go so over the top to get noticed but are still known as Video
nasties.

Evaluation - Final
For my course work i did a study on the Genre and Mise-en-scene on Shaun of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead. Both Films are of the Horror Genre. i was looking at how the conventions have changed over time for the horror genre One of the main tasks that i carried out was to create a Script for a Prequel for either Shan or Dawn of the dead. In the end i went with Dawn of the Dead. Part of my Script was that i was required to create 9 key frames for my script to go with. The 9 frames had to be of the characters (in costume) posed as they would in the scene where the script has taken place. My Script had to either be a Prequel or Sequel and show either a Resolution (how things are fixed) or show the Disruption (what caused it). i Decided to go for the Disruption of how the zombie outbreak in Dawn of the Dead started.
For my script i mainly focused on the doctor being this mad, distorted mess of a person. i wanted people who read the scripted to feel what the doctor was going through and why he's doing these experiments. My main study was to show how the conventions on how the horror genre had changed over the years. My script was about a mad scientist who's daughter died of a terrible illness while he was in prison for testing on his patients to find the cure for his daughter. He escaped and kidnapped a tramp on the side of the street and took him to his lab, to try and find the cure but ends up creating the zombie virus. after months of experiments he begins a video diary of his progress. I used ideas from other films such as SAW, Hostel, Dawn of the Dead and Shaun of the Dead. I also took ideas from these films such as using the doctor cutting his arm off from SAW and Hostel, The way that there is a doctor like in Dawn of the Dead and how that in the end of Shaun of the Dead it ends with Shaun and his best mate as a now zombie in a shed together.
For my 9 key frames i focused on the characters as well as the things that make the film show the horror genre. I used The Zombie, Blood, Mad Scientist, Gore, Lab, Dog, Victim to Zombie, Dark Gloomy Shed.
For my 9 key frames i focused on the characters as well as the things that make the film show the horror genre. I used The Zombie, Blood, Mad Scientist, Gore, Lab, Dog, Victim to Zombie, Dark Gloomy Shed.
For my location report i decided to go for a kitchen and a shed like in shaun of the dead and how it links to the film. In the end of shaun of the dead we see Shaun and Ed in a shed and i thought this would be a really good way to show how i wanted to relate my script to both films while basing it off of one of them.
The part of my course work that went well was my script. This was because i could be creative and show of the genre horror in my own way and link the both my script to the film i was basing it of. One way i did this was by showing how zombies don't attack dogs and only go for humans. In Dawn of the Dead we see a dog escape and the zombies don't care so i thought i could express this more in my script. I also wanted to show how far this character i had created would go to be successful and the way i did this was by including a moment where the doctor cuts his arm off and makes a sacrifice to the zombie for the good of his research. The most important scene of all was to show how it all happens. i included a scene where we see how the zombie escapes and infects another person making the virus even worst. This was both the most creative and hardest parts to do because all had to fit while sticking to the horror zombie genre.
The things that wasn't as good about my script was the fact that it was shot in a kitchen and not a lab like a doctor/scientist should be based and along side that i wanted to use a white lab coat which would of made the character look more professional and better. Due to it being a kitchen and not a lab i was unable to use any props such as surgical equipment and and scientist equipment (beakers, computers) I also couldn't do the zombie up as well as i wanted to do. I wish i had used some make up for the blood and scars.
In conclusion though as a while i loved planning and writing up the script and getting the people together to make it happen. to be able to write up all this has been something i didn't think i could do but im proud of my work and hope anyone who reads it likes it as much as i liked making it happen.

Textural Analysis Final
Shaun of the Dead (2004) tells a comic and tragedy story of a man who has no main skills and is in a dead end job who does the same daily routing but never stops and questions it. Dawn of the Dead (2004) tells a dramatic and horror filed story as doctor Ana wakes up one morning and her life has changed. Shaun of the Dead was given a 15 rating and Dawn of the Dead was given a 18, which include alcohol, language, violence and horror. In this essay I will be discussing the narrative of how the characters develop through out the films. Edgar Wright directed Shaun of the dead. Dawn of the dead was directed by Zach Snyder but was a re-make of the 1978’s Dawn of the Dead which was directed by George A. Romero. I intend to look into a narrative approach and answer questions such as; how has the character developed? How is this life changing? And many more.
Shaun of the Dead’s character develops by gaining leadership and survival skills. He also learns how care about his friends and show emotion towards them. In the scene when Shaun must defend the pub from a zombie attack we are show that his mum has been bitten and is slowly dying. When Shaun sees this he blocks out everything including the zombies and focuses on his mum. As his mum slowly dies he begins to cry. His shows how he has gained emotion and has started caring. When she dies David picks up the Winchester rifle that they have been using to fight the zombies and points it at Shaun’s mum. Shaun then begins the get angry and smashes a bottle and points it at David to stop him from shooting his mum. Shaun’s mum then comes back as a zombie and Shaun must take leadership and its up to him to shoot her. He shoots him mum and drops the gun. David then says, “We did the right thing” Shaun the turns around and punches him in the face. This shows he isn’t to be messed with and has gained strength. Shaun portrays his character as being the stereotypical lazy english man who has a bad job and lives in a rubbish house with his two collage mate.
In Dawn of the Dead Ana’s character turns into a fearless healer. She’s gets the job in her group to heal any people who are wounded. She doesn’t understand that she can’t save everyone in the beginning of the film but learns that some wounds can’t be treated. She becomes a fighter and losses her fear of the zombies. We learnt this from when her group is escaping the harbor to get on a boat. One of the cars flips over and she runs out of her car and goes to save the other group. She is covered in blood from where she has killed zombies as well which shows us that she has been fighting against the horde as well.
In Shaun of the Dead zombies are slow and only walk where as Dawn of the Dead’s zombies are faster and more versatile. Dawn of the Dead’s zombies have upper body strength and can also think more tacitly. Shaun of the Deads zombies don’t really think, if they see something alive they try to kill it. In the Scene where Shaun tries to get his group into the Winchester Pub there is a massive horde of zombies in their way. Shaun and his group imitate the zombies by pretending to be zombies to try and make there way around them. The zombies then get onto them and relies their people and try to kill them. Shaun then stands up on a bench and gains their attention. He then runs through them all and doesn’t get thrown down onto the floor. He then leads them all away from the pub, very slowly. Shaun gains an understanding of this and uses it to his advantage and knows that they will never catch him so he can get away as slowly as he likes. In Dawn of the Dead during the escape to the harbor the zombies chase after them. Their speed has greatly increased due to the zombie infection inside of them and has given them the speed to keep up with a truck that the survivors are in. Also In Dawn of the Dead during the escape scene by the harbor there is a load of rubble in the way that the truck has made when it has smashed into the fence wall blocking the harbor. The zombies clime over it very quickly. The group of survivors studies the speed of the zombies and thinks more tacitly on how to approach things. They know how fast they are so they plan a head and have escape routes for every plan they make. In both films they learn that to kill a zombie is to get them in the head.
Shaun is a lazy character. He also follows the same routine everyday and is used to getting up, getting dressed, going to the shops, coming home, going to work, coming home then going out for a drink. He does this everyday so is unaware of the zombie out burst when he goes out in the morning. A kid who plays football outside of his house every morning is covered in blood and moaning but he doesn’t pay attention. When he gets to the shop to buy a Strawberry Cornetto and a diet coke he doesn’t notice the blood splatters over the freezer doors. Also he always slips on the floor in the shop because its always wet but this time its not water. As he walks back he doesn’t notice the dogs barking or the zombies walking. He walks right past one and says “sorry mate aint got any change” After Shaun’s first encounter with the zombies he learns about what to look out for and what they look like which gives him an advantage against the horde. In Dawn of the Dead after Ana is woken up by her next-door neighbor she is attacked by a zombie girl who bites her boyfriend and causes him to turn into a zombie. As she climes out of her bathroom window she sees her neibourhood and the havoc that has been caused. Zombies are running around and eating people and body bags are moving and fires from houses are going up. As Ana gets in her car and starts driving away she sees her best friend being eaten and starts to so emotion towards it.
Both characters are faced in the end with a life risking conclusion. Shaun is trapped in a cellar with his ex girlfriend (who he gets back with in the end) and his best mate who is now bitten. He has two shells left in his gun and has to decide what to do. all three come up with a conclusion about shooting themselves so they don't get turned. Shaun then sees a button to a elevator which will take them outside. He gives the gun to Ed and says his goodbyes before escaping. After they leave they are then rescued by the army and all is well. The zombies are put under control and are used for working purposes such as being trolly boys at supermarkets. Shaun and his now back together girl friend are returned home and carry on there lives. However in Dawn of the Dead when Ana escapes with the rest of her crew on a boat they end up on what they think is a deserted island and are instantly ambushed upon arrive. We hear gun fire for a few seconds and screaming but then the screen goes black. From what we can get from this is that not all smart people who have a perfect life make it to the end. Shaun is a dumb lazy guy who works in a shop selling TVs who makes it through the end and lives while a person who works in a hospital as a doctor doesn't make it to the end and dies. It shows the difference in genre by saying that the British humor can make it to the end while the american seriousness of film ends really sadly and how you would expect any zombie film to end
Dawn of the Dead doesn't follow the same conventions as a typical zombie film like Dawn of the Dead because one is a parody of the other so its trying to take the mic out of what the others trying to do. Dawn of the Dead uses the stereotypical "go the the mall" theme which is used in a lot of zombie films where as Shaun of the Dead decides to go there local pub. You wouldn't see the idea of going to a pub in any other zombie film but because its a british comedy its set for the best scene. all the best comedies have been set in bars so its fits really well. Dawn of the Dead being a serious films is more planed out for example they go to a mall because it has a lot supplies such as food and weapons.
In conclusion anyone can be a hero. It takes the right moment in time to change a person’s whole personality. It can be either a doctor who saves peoples lives everyday or a guy who manages a shop a TV shop in a small town. When faced in a moment of terror a character can go from being a lazy, poor, careless person into being a fearless hero, or a well skilled doctor who saves lives everyday to carry on saving lives even when people are dying all around her.

Shots
The doctor posing as he would be when he is making his video diaries. The mad hair shows a sort of un-wasked state where he has had no sleep and has been wearing the same thing for weeks.
Shots of Lab
This shows the Doctors hidden path way into his laboratory. The darkness of the shot shows fear and mystery. The gloomy looks shows that the doctor has been hiding this Lab for a long time. The abandoned forest look with the abandoned thrown out mattress shows the dirty look that the forest has to show can be used as a long shot of the hidden lab.
The close up of the shot shows a scary gloomy run down shack that has been made like this to hide the fact of the horrors that are hidden within.
